POAD‛S EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION
This was set up by the will of Richard Poad in 1727. The will is held at the Borthwick Institute in York. The bequests were in the form of small parcels of land in Newton Parish, school buildings and monies which were left intrust to give grants to assist the children of the Parish of Newton Upon Rawcliffe.
The location of the original school would have been the existing, building to the North, and adjacent, to St John's Church, this eventually became the Village Reading Room, which was replaced by the school at the top of the village which is now the Village Hall. The Reading Room was eventually sold and the money invested and incorporated into the funds of the Trust. The Trust is still administered, in the terms of the will, by local village Trustees representitives of the village, Church and Local Government. The Poads Educational Charity continues today and provides small grants annually for young people who reside within the Parish Boundary under the age of twenty five years.
The grants are distributed annually and are for young people up to the age of twenty five. They are to be used to assist pupils to attend schools, institutions training or classes, by contributing to paying fees, travelling or other incidental expenses The Foundation supports the promotion of education, social and physical training.
Applications for grants can be downloaded from this site and returned to the administrators (currently Jane Hemingway ) by 31st March.
