Originally Newton was part of Pickering Parish and during one period had three places of worship
As buildings fell into disrepair, and were condemned, work on the present Church St John's was started in 1866. The present Church was consecrated in 1870,
St Johns has altered very little over the years and is a simple, peaceful, typical mid Victorian country Church. The Church is set back but beautifully visible from the road, and is surrounded by the original grave yard.
There are excellent acoustics in the church, enhanced by a delightful 1894 'Harrison and Harrison' Organ
The Church also hosts a very fine, and unusual clock with interesting workings visible and accessible for all to see.
You are very welcome to visit, at any time, and who knows, you may even find one or two famous mice!

Annual review 2022
Despite the relaxation of the Covid rules the first near “normal” year in the village has been somewhat fraught with change. However, here we are and hopefully here we will all stay for some years yet.
Thanks to the continued support of our friends outside the village we have held 13 services over the past year plus one wedding and a funeral.
Planned giving has reduced slightly to £3570 the plate giving has seen an increase to £1521.90 helping the near status quo annual income to be £6301.47p
Many thanks to everyone who gave so generously of their money and time.
Our services are currently averaging 10 attendees. Unfortunately only four of us actually reside in the Parish.
At Christmas we held Carols around the tree for the villagers and visitors. Approximately thirty people attended. Thanks to the generosity of the White Swan as we had to relocate inside due to the inclement weather. Thanks again to Chris for his superb organist skill.
We have had some changes in service providers this year. The Cemetery has been maintained by Wendy, a new resident into the village. We also have a wonderful new organist Mr Chris Welch from Thornton Le Dale. Many thanks Margaret for being “Taxi” in addition to your other roles.
The Church’s outgoing has increased over 2022 mainly due to an increased freewill offering to £4000 , the electricity increase has been massive over £1000 to £1312.98. This issue is still ongoing with E-on however we are looking to change providers in 2023. Total outgoings for 2022 was £7874.96 thus we have a loss year amounting to £1573.49p. Despite the increased running costs and the decrease in planned giving we will be starting 2023 with a quite healthy £16305.39 in our one and only account at Barclays Bank.
2023 will see a need for ongoing maintenance and possibly some more extensive interior decoration to help preserve the fabric of the Church building.
As hopefully we are all slowly getting back to “normal” our thoughts and prayers must go out to everyone suffering hardship in these financially difficult times and also to the ongoing atrocities occurring across the World. We should all be looking for PEACE.
